// wild apricot alternative
The custom alternative to Wild Apricot.
Stop renting a templated membership platform. Own one built for how your organization actually works - your programs, your members, your brand, your data.
// the honest version
Wild Apricot is good software
Let's be fair: Wild Apricot is a capable, all-in-one membership tool. If you're a small or new organization that needs a member database, a simple website, and the basics of events and payments - fast and on a tight budget - it's a sensible choice, and I'll say so on a call.
This page is for the organizations it starts to hold back: the ones whose members, programs, and brand have outgrown what a templated, rented platform can do. Full disclosure - I'm a developer, not a SaaS. I build the alternative described here. So here's the honest trade-off, both ways.
// rent vs own
The real question isn't features. It's whether you rent or own.
| Off-the-shelf SaaSe.g. Wild Apricot | A platform you ownbuilt for you | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup speed | Fast - sign up and you're live | Slower - it's built for you, over weeks |
| Upfront cost | Low | Higher - it's a real build |
| Cost over time | Recurring forever, often scaling with your member count | You own the asset; hosting + care, not per-member rent |
| Design & brand | Templated, within their system | Whatever your brand and members need |
| How it fits your org | You shape your org around the software | The software is shaped around how you work |
| Your data & code | Lives inside their platform | Yours - export it, move it, own it |
| Integrations | Their marketplace and what it supports | Anything with an API - Stripe, your CRM, email, events |
| If you outgrow or leave | Migration and lock-in to untangle | You already own it - nothing to escape |
| Who maintains it | They do - you're a tenant | I do, on a Care Plan - or your team. Either way it's yours |
// a fair comparison: SaaS wins on speed and upfront cost; owning wins on fit, control, and the long run. Accurate as of June 2026.
// this is for you if
- You've outgrown an off-the-shelf membership tool and keep hitting its walls.
- Your members deserve a better experience than a templated portal allows.
- You run real programs - dues, events, a member directory, gated content, donations - that need to work together.
- You want to own your platform, your data, and your brand, not rent them.
// stay on saas if
- You're a small or brand-new org that needs a member list and a simple site this week.
- Budget is tight and off-the-shelf covers what you need today.
- You don't have anyone (me included) to maintain a custom platform long term.

Architecture Review
We map what you actually need - programs, member journeys, integrations, data model - before anyone writes code. You leave with a plan you own, even if you don't build with me.
Migration Strategy (if you're already on Wild Apricot)
Your members, content, and SEO equity get tiered, mapped, and moved with a redirect plan, so the switch doesn't cost you traffic or trust.
Platform System build
The custom platform itself - member portal, payments, events, directory, gated content - built, deployed, and documented by one accountable owner.
Care Plan
After launch it stays fast, secure, and current. You never touch the engine, and you still own all of it.
// common questions
Can you migrate our existing Wild Apricot members and data?
Yes - that's the Migration Strategy engagement. Your member records, content, and pages get exported, tiered, and mapped to the new platform, with a full 301 redirect plan so you don't lose search traffic in the move.
Isn't a custom platform more expensive?
Upfront, yes - it's a real build, not a subscription. Over time, you stop paying per-member rent forever and you own the asset. For orgs that have outgrown SaaS, the math usually favors owning. For small orgs, it often doesn't, and I'll tell you that honestly on a call.
Who maintains it after launch?
I do, on a Care Plan - hosting, security, updates, backups, monitoring, and small edits - or your own team can. You own the code and data either way, so you're never locked to me.
How long does it take?
It's scoped per project and always starts with an Architecture Review. A full platform build runs in phases; you'll have a clear timeline and a fixed scope before you commit a dollar.
What about dues, donations, and events?
Built in, on the tools you already use - Stripe for payments and subscriptions, your CRM and email platform, event registration, and a member directory, wired together instead of bolted on.
Do we actually own everything?
Yes - the code, the design, and the data are yours. No platform lock-in, no per-member pricing, no walled garden.
